Benji Striker* made a lot of friends in his village in Senegal

Benji and his family moved to Sengal for a summer to share Jesus with the people living there. For a few months he and his family called a small village home. In Senegal, kids have few toys, so they play lots of games outside. One of Benji’s favorite games to play with his Senegal friends was Maway! You can play it too!

Maway!

FIRST...WORDS TO KNOW

Maway: I’m coming.

Da daoteh: I’m not ready.

Woway: Are you ready?

Wowoway: You’re ready, I’m not ready.

Wowow: I’m ready.

Here are the rules:

First, the person who is “it” must find a tree or post where “it” can have his or her whole eyes covered.

When “it” has his eyes covered, he says “Maway” and all the other players respond, “Da daoteh.”

“It” keeps saying “Maway” until he thinks everyone’s hidden, and then says “Woway.”

If they need more time, the other players may say “Wowoway,” in which case, “it’ continues to say “Woway.”

When the other players are hidden and ready, they say “Wowow.” “It” may then seek them out and chase them. If the other players touch the tree before “it” tags them, they are safe.

The person tagged by “it” before reaching the tree, or the last person to reach the tree is next to be “it.”
