Jesus IS Our Crutch!
Vol. 9 Cambodia
Medical Missions
Our earthly bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and everything that we do with these physical bodies should be done to glorify God. This is the story of Dr. Kendrick Kahler, a full-time Southern Baptist volunteer medical missionary doctor, who followed Jesus Christ all the way to Cambodia in spite of the fact that he is confined to a wheelchair.

SURFER BOB: Surf’s up, c’mon Billy-boy!

ACCOUNTANT BILL: Ummm … hmmm … I don’t know Bob … do you think this is such a … well … a … um … good … well … good idea?

SURFER BOB: Aw c’mon, Accountant Bill, sure it’s a good idea. Web-surfin’ is easy as cake. It’s a piece of pie!

ACCOUNTANT BILL: Um … well … you always mess that … well … mess that up. I think you meant to say … well … um … easy as pie … um … well … piece of … well … of cake.

SURFER BOB: Yeah, whatever.

PENNY: Surfer Bob, what have you gotten poor Accountant Bill into now?

SURFER BOB: Well, hey there Penny! I’m teachin’ ole’ A.B. how to surf. He’ll be ridin’ cyber-surf on a circuit board before you know it!

PENNY: I thought you were going to help me with my research on Cambodia today.

SURFER BOB: Patience, Penny, patience. Once Billy-boy gets the hang of this, we’ll have twice the Internet surfin’ power! And speakin’ of power, here’s a KOM PowerVerse I rustled up for ya’ while you wait. Take ya’ a look-see!

KOM PowerVerse

Philippians 3:20-21, NIV

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”

MR. CHRISTOPHER: Now THAT is a promise, Penny! We must always keep in mind that our earthly bodies are just temporary homes for our spiritual bodies. Our earthly bodies will be transformed when we go to heaven.

PENNY: That is quite a promise. Especially for those whose earthly bodies have been disabled by disease or some traumatic event.

MR. CHRISTOPHER: You’re right Penny. And, actually, I said that our bodies are temporary ‘HOMES.' According to 1st Corinthians 6:19, Paul says that our bodies are ‘TEMPLES of the Holy Spirit.’ Verse 20 says that we are to, ‘honor God with our bodies.’ That means as long as we have our earthly bodies, we should take care of them because they are temples of the Holy Spirit.

PENNY: If our bodies are ‘temples of the Holy Spirit’ we really need to make sure that we treat them as such. We need to avoid doing things that hurt our health. And, we need to make sure not to practice things that God says are immoral.

MR. CHRISTOPHER: True. But, we need to also keep in mind that, just like a religious temple, the whole purpose for this structure … that we call a body … is to use it for worshiping God our Father. Everything that we do should bring honor and glory to Him.

SURFER BOB: OK, now Accountant Bill … remember to focus on the wave. See the wave as yer friend. Make the wave your best buddy … yer numero uno amigo … yer …

ACCOUNTANT BILL: Sorry … um … to … um … interrupt Surfer Bob … um … but … that one looks to … um … BIG … to … well … to SURF!

SURFER BOB: Nonsense Billy-boy, no wave is too big. Just remember to become friends with the wa-OOOOOOOOH YOWIEE!!!!!

ACCOUNTANT BILL: Bob, Bob. Are you OK?

PENNY: It looks like Surfer Bob isn’t going to be a lot of help to us today, Mr. C. He’s trying to teach Accountant Bill how to surf the Internet.

MR. CHRISTOPHER: That’s OK, Penny. I have a file that demonstrates EXACTLY what we’ve been discussing today about our bodies as instruments of our Father God. It was sent to me from the International Mission Board. Here download this.

PENNY: Awesome! OK, here we go!

PENNY: That is incredible! Dr. Kahler has chosen to follow the call of Christ in spite of his physical disability. And, he does it on his own nickel…volunteering full time for the cause of the gospel!

MR. CHRISTOPHER: Yes, Dr. Kahler is an inspiration to all of us. There really aren’t very many excuses when considering our role in international missions. For instance, even if you can’t go to the international mission field as a volunteer or career missionary you can certainly pray for specific missionaries and the people groups those missionaries work with. You can pray for Dr. Kendrick Kahler!

PENNY: And another very important way that we can participate in international missions is with our tithes through the Cooperative Program and our gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering®. These financial resources are crucial in supporting those who have answered God’s call and serve Him on the international mission field.

MR. CHRISTOPHER: Write to us and let us know how you are participating in international missions. Write a letter to: Kids On Mission, International Mission Board, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, VA 23230.

PENNY: Or e-mail us by visiting our Web site at: www.kidsonmission.org. Follow the link that says ‘kids’ and you will see where to drop us a line. Listen to this cool e-mail that we just received from a KOMster out there in cyber-space!

SURFER BOB: OUCH!!! Be careful, Billy! Watch where you’re setting that TV tray. And, did you remember to get me the Chipotle hot sauce and not the Jalapeño hot sauce?

PENNY: Surfer Bob, what happened to you? What’s with the crutches and all the ACE® bandages?

SURFER BOB: Well, Penny … I was trying to teach Billy-boy here to surf and got all distracted and the wave came and …

ACCOUNTANT BILL: And, um … well … Surfer Bob … was saying to become friends … um … with … well … with the wave and he didn’t well … realize … that this particular wave wanted him to meet … um … well …

SURFER BOB: Yeah, yeah, yeah, AB … this particular wave wanted me to meet with his other biggest best buddy … the BEACH! Hardee har har! That’s a problem when you meet that particular buddy face to face, if you know what I mean, amigita! Yeah, go ahead … yuck it up, Accountant Bill!

MR. CHRISTOPHER: Looks like Surfer Bob has had to trade in his surf board for a sturdy pair of crutches for a while, huh Penny?

PENNY: Yeah, surfing with crutches might be a little difficult.

MR. CHRISTOPHER: You know, Penny. That makes me think … there are those in the world that would call Jesus Christ a ‘crutch.’ You know, someone for weak people to lean on … it is used by some nonbelievers as a criticism … a negative term.

PENNY: Uh huh. I’ve heard people say that before.

MR. CHRISTOPHER: Well, Jesus IS a ‘crutch.’ He is OUR crutch, as Christians. Jesus Christ is whom we lean on when we struggle. He supports and holds us steady as we encounter all of the trials of life.

PENNY: Wow! You’re right! Jesus is OUR crutch! He’s my crutch, your crutch … Mr. C … , Dr. Kahler’s crutch and certainly Surfer Bob’s crutch, given his current condition especially!

MR. CHRISTOPHER: If He’s not already, let Him become your crutch gang! Believe in Him, lean on Him … trust Him in all that you do! You won’t ever regret it! We’ll see you next time!
